Have you ever wondered what goes on behind closed doors at the Museum? Would you like to find out what has been keeping our conservators busy? Do you want to see where and how things get ‘fixed’?
During recent sessions with the public, our taxidermy objects such as foxes, moles, beavers, squirrels and other animals have been given a fresh look! Now it’s your turn to explore how interesting conservation can be and to find out more about the secrets of the profession.
Interested in having a go? Join our Conservator on 20 August for a hands-on object identification, condition checking, cleaning and packing session.
Conservation Assistant Carrie Calver says:
‘Ipswich Museum’s Conservation team has hosted four family day events over the summer holidays. Families have been helping hoover and wet clean taxidermy specimens. These specimens have been selected to go back on display in the redeveloped Museum. Children have been cleaning mice, foxes, stoats, parrots, wombats, koalas and monkeys just to name a few.
These events have allowed the community to get hands on and involved in the redevelopment where they can then see their work on display in the future. We thank every single person that has come to take part.
Tuesday 20th August will see the team host an ‘adults only’ conservation event where visitors will get hands on with bigger and more complex objects due to go back on display. Join us, tickets are selling fast!’
These sessions involve handling taxidermy and objects that need cleaning, so they are unsuitable for those with allergies to animal fur and dust. However, they are fully accessible.
The adult sessions are aimed at people aged 18 and older and will involve more complex treatments, in-depth details, and conversations about what a conservator is and does.
The venue: SPILL Think Tank is fully accessible via the Museum Gardens and the rear of the Ipswich Art Gallery. For helpful information, such as how to find the SPILL Think Tank and the facilities available, click here: SPILL Festival
Sessions run from 10 AM to 12 noon or from 1 PM to 3 PM.
Tickets: £20 per adult
