Ipswich Borough Council is pleased to announce the start of the tendering process for the highly anticipated museum redevelopment project. Marking a significant milestone in the Council’s efforts to revitalise and transform the museum into a world-class cultural hub.

The redevelopment project, which will encompass extensive renovations, expansion, and the introduction of innovative exhibits, aims to create an immersive and educational experience for visitors. The construction phase will repair and refurbish the landmark Grade II* listed Ipswich Museum, improving facilities and access for visitors with a new lift and level floors, whilst retaining the original Victorian atmosphere of the Natural History Gallery.

Next year will see a second round of tenders for the gallery exhibition installation. This phase will see the realisation of the designs for the exhibiting Ipswich’s extensive Museum collections, which contains many items of outstanding international significance. These designs are still being finalised, and when ready updates will be available on the Council’s website.

Councillor Carole Jones, Ipswich Borough Council Portfolio Holder for Planning and Museums, says:

“This exciting project will see the Museum’s facilities improved with better access for all. The architectural beauty of Ipswich Museum will be restored to its former glory as we preserve the significant Victorian fabric and fittings in the Natural History Gallery, as well as improving the fabric of the building and its environmental performance.

“We will be opening up spaces to exhibit more of our collections, ensuring that our much-loved Museum will be a wonderful place to visit for years to come.”
